“A Star Is Born” in a Ballad

film and music aficionados are satisfied after Oct 5th, 2018 since there’s
a “buy one get one” deal being released with the fourth edition of “A Star Is
Born” directed and produced by the Oscar nominated actor Bradley Cooper,
costarred and sang along with the Grammy-winning singer Lady Gaga.
A remake of the 1937 film of the same name, this musical romantic drama
paints a ballad in which a musician, Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), helps a
young singer and actress, Ally (Lady Gaga), find fame, even as his age and
alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.
Even if you’re someone who doesn’t like romance, you’d still enjoy “A
Star Is Born” for as long as you admire Gaga’s singing, the flick itself is
basically a two-and-half-hour concert, not to mention that Cooper’s voice is as
amazing as his acting skills.
Talking about the protagonists, we see how successful the cross-field
is. Not only Cooper’s first attempt directing leads something old new again,
but also Gaga’s acting skill. Gaga has been celebrated for her alternative and
provocative work, and it’s not her first time appearing in a motion picture,
but this is her first time “acting” on the big screen and not as herself but a
fictional character. Since she was a teenager, she began acting in school plays
as well as singing, so it’s not a big surprise that we see this façade of her
in “A Star Is Born”, just that she focused on pursuing a music career, hiding
Ally behind the microphone.
Aside from depicting a love story, original intention and stardom are
two themes mentioned in “A Star Is Born” just as “La La Land” does. Sometimes,
the philosophy of balancing someone’s dream and original intention could be
difficult, but as a touching ballad, we get to see how Ally and Jackson support
each other on the way pursuing their dreams, or Ally’s dream, in some way. It
could be hard, but once you’re sure about what you really want and prioritize
well, you’re able to balance, manage and organize your life instead of turning
into chaos.
What we hear and see in “A Star Is Born” are love between Ally and
Jackson, which people might describe as “true love”, but that doesn’t mean they
don’t face obstacles. On the contrary, that’s exact the reason why the movie
moves its audience that whenever we listen to Ally or Jackson sing for each
other, tears can’t be stopped. Moviegoers witness their love story, Jackson’s
alcoholism, his downside and upset and all the efforts, the feeling of losing
one’s dream and hope is even stronger.
All in all, “A Star Is Born” is definitely one of the best picture this
year as long as you believe in love story, and even if you don’t, just take it
as watching a concert, emerge yourself in the atmosphere, enjoy the music and
relax in the ballad.
