If you grew up in the 2000s, you probably remember the American sitcom aired on Disney Channel "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody", and the actor who played Cody, Cole Sprouse, is now ready for his first feature film without his older brother. "Five Feet Away", which was released in the US on March 15, 2019, though has received some attacks, has been popular among aficionados under 25.
Based on the novel with the same name by
Rachel Lippincott, which was published in November 2018, this romantic drama
talks about a pair of teenagers with a life-threatening genetic disorder, cystic
fibrosis, meet each other in a hospital, fall in love and how they cope with
the "six foot rule" between their relationship.
Touching indeed, but "Five Feet
Apart" is really in a love story cliché that "boy meets girl, boy
loses girl, boy finds girl again" and the archetypal bad boy heartthrob of
high school girl fantasies. With cystic fibrosis as its main background, the
film itself could do better and go deeper rather than just trying to bring
tears into the audience's eyes.
Besides the plot defects, "Five Feet
Apart" receives criticisms because it's just another sick-teens-in-love
flick without any new twists and how it combines cystic fibrosis and romance.
Many advocates or patients of the disorder protest that it's not an ideal way
to draw awareness and the motion picture is misleading, but still, some think
the disorder is finally depicted in a Hollywood movie.
On the other side, since the target
audience of "Five Feet Apart" is youngsters, the storyline itself
aspires them to ponder about death and the fact that life is unpredictable. The
protagonists in the picture don't act their ages because they are forced to
grow up due to their disorder. Such heavy issue is like everyday conversation
to them that they're so used to and thus become more mature as well.
Both the scores and songs of "Five
Feet Apart" are easy on the ear, and they match the emotion perfectly so
that moviegoers can taste the characters' feelings and the lyrics at the same
time.
As mentioned before, fans of "The
Suite Life of Zack & Cody" might be interested to take a look at
"Five Feet Apart", and of course Cole looks pretty different from
childhood now, but whenever he puts that crooked smile on his face, it reminds
the audience's memory of that naughty round face little boy.
Although the title is part of the reasons
advocates and patients are protesting, saying that it ought to be
"six" feet instead of "five", according to intentional
fallacy, the naming of the feature film could be simply as "a step
closer". And except the abovementioned flaws, "Five Feet Apart"
is at least an amazing popcorn film to give a cry and experience the
preciousness of living happily and healthily.
