Bollywood is where in the world that produces the most feature films in a year, but have you seen a Bollywood film related to Kung Fu? “The Man Who Feels No Pain”, which is going to be released on Mar 22nd, 2019, pays tribute to martial arts flicks and masters due to Director Vasan Bala’s personal interest.

“The Man Who Feels No Pain” premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, and won the People's Choice Award: Midnight Madness. Combining action and comedy aspects, it is a story of a young boy Surya who has a rare condition of Congenital Insensitivity to pain, meaning he cannot feel pain, and he sets out to learn Kung Fu and hunt down muggers.

An atypical Bollywood motion picture it is, the length of The Man Who Feels No Pain” is only a little bit longer than two hours, instead of the usual three or four hours. Also, although there are still a host of killer songs throughout the movie, they’re not characteristic Bollywood ones that actors and actresses dance along, but those that fit the martial arts action theme pretty well. When it comes to the theme, we usually see Bollywood pictures focus on education, love or pursuing dreams like Director Aamir Khan’s works, but even though “The Man Who Feels No Pain” still pursuits dreams, it has nothing to do with Indian culture, but a pure tribute to Kung Fu and the VHS era that the Director wants to present to the world.

At the Director’s insistence, the son of a celebrated actress in India, the leading actor, Abhimanyu Dasanni, not only did most of the fighting scenes himself in leather shoes and shirts, but also was critically acclaimed for his acting skills because this was his big screen debut.

Picking martial arts as the theme, “The Man Who Feels No Pain” utilizes an attribute that the audience is familiar with in the Hollywood action comedy “Kick-ass”, Congenital Insensitivity to pain. This real disorder is rare, but is an extremely dangerous condition since feeling physical pain is critical for survival. People with such condition usually die in childhood because of illnesses and injuries unnoticed. Traits of this disorder is mentioned and depicted in the picture and helps introducing the reason why Sauya wants to become a Kung Fu master.

Not only is the actor Dasanni performing the actions himself amazing, but also the joy when moviegoers recognize all the tributes to Bruce Lee, Jackie Chen and more martial arts dimensions while watching “The Man Who Feels No Pain” attractive.

With both action and comedy elements, “The Man Who Feels No Pain” is a feature film that most people can enjoy, and if you love Bollywood films in general, here’s your chance to experience the other side of the industry with a brilliant example. It’s definitely one of the best flicks this year that stuns you with laughter.
