Viola's Rating:7.4
As Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is about to conclude Phase Three, before introducing Captain Marvel into the last feature film “Avengers: Endgame” in this phase, here comes Marvel Studio’s first female-led superhero film. Being released on Mar 8, 2019, less than two months before “Avengers: Endgame” is released, “Captain Marvel” is ready to blast off.
Based on one of MCU’s most powerful superheroes, this adventurous, sci-fi action depicts the story after Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races, Kree and Skrull.
Although “Captain Marvel” is rather mediocre comparing to other MCU flicks, it’s still an amazing motion picture with Marvel Studio standard. As if watching “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” TV series, there are a bunch of details and Easter Eggs waiting for aficionados to spot, including how Captain Marvel and Nick Fury developed their friendship and more about the history between Kree and Skrull, something that audience only gets clues with the comic books or through “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”.
Many suggest that “Captain Marvel” is a feminism movie, so those who don’t agree with the concept despise the picture, while on the other side, other people think that it’s ridiculous to bring out Captain Marvel so late. However, this is merely another superhero feature film. If gender is a noticeable issue, it means moviegoers still aren’t fully sexism-free. Actually, aside from the fact that Captain Marvel is much stronger than Captain America, they share a host of similarities. For example, they both have “Hero Moments” that bring tears into the audience’s eyes. Also, they were both soldiers before becoming superheroes, so nationality and patriotism are way different to them than to other heroes. From this angle, only two human beings, or two superheroes are seen, instead of characters with different genders.
For cat enthusiasts, pay attention to the content. There’s no shots of the cat in the trailer, so that’s all we can talk about here in order to avoid spoiler, but since MCU even launched a poster with only cat on it, it’s obvious how important the role is within the film.
Besides the Marvel attributes moviegoers are all so familiar with, “Captain Marvel” provides a large number of nostalgic aspects since its background is set in the 90s. Similar to the time when Thor first came to Earth, these dimensions are brought out with clever humor.
All in all, “Captain Marvel” may not be one of the best MCU flicks, but it’s still satisfying, and ready to blast off as the second to the last work of Phase Three.
