With “A Star Is Born”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” being released in 2018 and “Rocketman” in 2019, more and more music related feature films are brought into the market. Watching films is not only a visual celebration nowadays, but also an audio feast. If 2018 is the musical year for the US, then 2019 is for the UK. With its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8 2018, the Scottish flick “Wild Rose” was released on April 12 2019 in the UK and June 12 in the US.
Casting Jessie Burkley, an Irish actress and singer, just like “A Star Is Born” did, this musical drama discusses how a young, single-mom musician from Glasgow, Rose-Lynn, dreams of becoming a Nashville country music star and her inside battle between pursuing her dream career and taking care of her family.
It has been said that mothers give up their own dreams for children and family, and that’s exactly the dilemma we see in “Wild Rose”. Besides, effort doesn’t guarantee the success, it just improves its chances, and when people know this principle by heart, how can they not even try, but to Rose-Lynn, although she’ll never be satisfied if she’s not even trying, she doesn’t want to disappoint her kids anymore and they’re what she can’t leave behind.
Jessie Buckley is no doubt the spirit of “Wild Rose”, not only with her amazing acting skill to perfectly demonstrate the desperation of Rose-Lynn, but also her awesome singing talent. “Wild” Rose talks more than just Rose-Lynn’s behavior, the powerful voice is as wild as one can ever imagine as well. Merely Buckley’s second motion picture, she has more works coming up the following years, and after her performance in “Wild Rose”, people would anticipate to see her again for sure.
Despite Rose-Lynn’s obvious young appearance, her actual age isn’t brought up in “Wild Rose”. Instead, her children’s ages are mentioned. The movie starts with Rose-Lynn leaving the prison, representing that she’s free, but her two kids restrain wherever she goes, and such fight within herself is what triggers the sympathy.
Country music is the core of “Wild Rose”, even though the background and time period aren’t said in the feature film, it not only makes fun of the term “country music” replacing “country and western” in 1970s, but also pays tribute to Harlan Howard, an American country music songwriter. As a child, he listened to the Grand Ole Opry radio show, and he once said “Country music is three chords and truth.” Country music aficionados will find these elements very familiar, and the all original soundtrack is brilliant with Buckley’s singing.
“Wild Rose” may sound like a familiar tune, but with Buckley’s fantastic voice and the character’s passion towards country music, it definitely tears at your heartstrings and sings the beauty of mothers.
