On
Jan, 8, the Friday before the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, the Oscar
winning director, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest feature film, The Revenant, was released and is aiming
for awards.
This adventurous western thriller was adapted
from part of Michael Punke’s well-known novel The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, which based on the story of
American legendary frontiersman named Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio). Glass was
on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s, and went on a survival quest after
being brutally mauled by a grizzly bear.
After the critically acclaimed Wolf of Wall Street, Leonardo DiCaprio’s
acting ascended to another level by depicting the emotion, facial expression and
pain being attacked by a bear. His performance in the film makes the bear
extremely lifelike, and the struggle trying to fight against it successfully enhances
the tension in that scene.
Shooting mainly in Alberta, Canada and
Argentina, Oscar winning Mexican cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, clearly
presents both beauty and cruelty of Mother Nature in The Revenant with many bird’s eye views and wide-angle camera
shots. This is not Iñárritu and Lubezki’s first cooperation, their brilliant simulating
one-take camera movements got them Best Director and Best Cinematography with Birdman. In The Revenant, audiences can marvel at significant sceneries and immerse
themselves into the plateau climate.
In addition to the visual enjoyment, the
score of The Revenant emphasizes the loneliness
in the wilderness. Corresponding to its 1820’s background, the vibe of the
movie is a combination of Native American and New England culture. The intense
score gives viewers an authentic ambience that they’re by Glass’ side throughout
the picture.
Director Iñárritu watched videos of bear
attacks online and utilized motion capture to create the CG bear. Iñárritu was
not only demanding on this specific difficult scene, but also fastidious on
many details such as the survival techniques Glass uses and the weaponry at the
time. He made sure that everything is faithful.
Even with some gruesome and realistic
scenes that might scare audiences away, The
Revenant is no doubt a fantastic feature film in the beginning of this
year. For those who are not particularly interested in western films, it can
still intrigue them merely with its aesthetic shots.
