“John Wick: Chapter 3”: More to Come
Release Date:May/17/2019
Genre:Action/Crime/Thriller
Director:Chad Stahelski
Cast:Keanu Reeves、Halle Berry、Ian McShane、Anjelica Huston
Viola's Rating:8.3
Since the audience last saw the super assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) coming back from his retirement life in 2017, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” not only picks up where the previous episode left off, but also continues the unprecedented excitement for the next feature film to come.
As the third chapter of the franchise, this criminal action thriller talks about how the killing machine John Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin's guild leadership the High Table, and with a $14 million price tag on his head - he is the target of all hit men and women everywhere.
Unlike the previous two episodes, which were more about gun-shooting and weaponry display, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” is concerned with more blades and hand-on-hand combats, and this attribute indeed gives the film some better fight scenes to be enjoyed with.
Aside from the essential adrenaline-driven scenes an action flick should boast, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” provides some comic relief from the intensity of the scene, and there’s some wit buried within the lines, especially with those making fun of Wick’s dog, which add humor into this chapter that moviegoers can watch with laughter.
First time bearing a subheading under its name, the “Parabellum” in the title means “prepare for war” in Latin, which clearly tells the audience that there’s another motion picture following. Starting from the time right after the ending of “Chapter 2”, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” not only prepares itself for the war coming, but also prepares moviegoers for the background story of Chapter 4.
Always rated R for pervasive strong violence and some improper language usage, the “John Wick” series contain a bunch of amazing actions with brilliant stunts and mounting fights from glass-walled room, horseback to motorcycles, technically anywhere can be a fight scene, and “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” especially deals with sound design. The decent sound effects perfect the movie-watching experience so much that the audience can feel the pain of those chasing Wick.
Coming to the third episode, it’s possible that moviegoers may feel a little bit tired of those repetitive gun shootings which grow into numbing eventually. However, getting more and more attractive each chapter, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” runs for his own life and is ready for a big twist coming after.
Although “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” isn’t a picture that gives us some food for thought, its satisfying, choreographed, over-the-top action can definitely crown itself as one of the best feature films this year so far, and as the shooting plan for Chapter 4 is not yet to be known, there’s much more to be looked forward to.
