With the release of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” on Friday, Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) journey finally comes to an end.
Fans of this adventurous, sci-fi film series have flocked to theaters in support of the films for four straight years, and this final film is sure to provide them a satisfying conclusion. The Hunger Games movies are adapted from American author Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of a dystopian society with this last film being an adaptation of the second half of the third installment. Coming after the mediocre first part, “Mockingjay Part 2” does a good job being enjoyable and exciting.
This movie jumps right in where the previous movie ended, and as the war of Panem carries on, the destruction of other districts caused by the Capitol keeps increasing. Tortured by witnessing the personal suffering President Snow (Donald Sutherland) has brought upon her friends and family in his quest to maintain power, Katniss, the reluctant face of the rebellion, is driven to continue fighting Snow on the front lines of the battlefield.
As Katniss leads a squad to infiltrate the Capitol, she has to navigate through booby trapped streets and avoid enemy soldiers in an ordeal that director Francis Lawrence presents with an ambiance which feels exactly like a new rendition of the annual Hunger Games. The tension created by not knowing if the next step will be your last gives moviegoers a taste of what it is like to be a tribute. Timid viewers might even find it scarier than entering a haunted house because of hellish creatures and death dealing traps with which the game makers fill the city.
Although the whole movie is full of adrenaline-filled action scenes, it builds up the audiences’ emotion to a high point, and drops without providing a climax. While the picture tries to convey the message of the dark side of a government, personal traumas which continue haunting many of the characters make it too somber.
Another sad fact is that this is not only the finale of Katniss, the Mockingjay, but also the last film of Oscar winner, Philip Seymour Hoffman, before he was found dead in an apartment in New York, meaning that this is the last chance to glimpse his excellent acting skills on the big screen.
Besides the amazing acting by Hoffman and Oscar-winning leading actress Jennifer Lawrence, the audience will be happy to see the reunion of all the surviving characters that have appeared in the series so far. In addition, shippers will get to see who Katniss chooses in her love triangle with her childhood compatriot and her hunger games companion.
Watching a dystopian film sounds bleak, but just like Jennifer Lawrence in her Oscar-winning feature film “Silver Linings Playbook,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” will not let you down. Instead it lights up the darkness in the series, and if the end of the movie series leaves you down, you can always meet up with Katniss once again by immersing yourself in the well-received novels.
