Hollywood
has just experienced the #Metoo movement, and as female rights, sexual assault
and harassment are raising awareness, “Three Billboards outside Ebbing,
Missouri” was released on December 1st, 2017, which got six Oscar
nominations, hoping to add some warmth to depth of winter.
Set in
Ebbing, Missouri, an invented town, this criminal drama is depicted as a “The
Lovely Bones” meets “Wind River” story. It talks about a mother personally
challenges the local authorities, the beloved and respected Chief in
particular, to solve her daughter’s murder case when they fail to catch the
culprit or arrest any suspects.
Already
an R-rated feature film, “Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri” doesn’t
open the Pandora box with the detailed murder, but starts with Mildred, the
mother, driving through the distant road where the three billboards stand
still.
“Three
Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri” get to the point directly because unlike “Wind
River”, rape and murder aren’t the theme of the film, but redemption and
salvation. In “The Lovely Bones”, we see a devastated father while in this
flick, we see a heartbroken mother, whom other people might consider completely
barmy as residents in Ebbing take sides on either Chief or Mildred after she
rents the billboards.
Not
only discussing redemption and salvation, “Three Billboards outside Ebbing,
Missouri” also demonstrates the actual situation regional police stations might
face. The fact that even if the Chief is willing to work on a murder case, it
seems too difficult to solve if without FBI’s assistance and the existence of
discriminating police officers who misapply their authority. However, some
people criticize that the motion picture doesn’t embody the real USA due to the
reason that the screenplay was written by British director Martin McDonagh.
From
the question Mildred poses on the three billboards to all the lines every character
says to each other, “Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri” displays the
power of words. Throughout the movie, sarcastic, encouraging, forgiving and
warm sentences continue to connect the plots, and the interactions between
characters indicate the simplicity of their lives in this small town. Although
this crime and the behavior putting up the billboards might tear apart people’s
feelings, those who are still alive need to face themselves so that they’re
able to move on, and that, is what the picture tries to tell us as well.
“Three
Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri” is one of the most amazing feature films
in Oscar-bait months, and although it draws attention to a deep issue, it’s not
as serious as “Wind River” since the main theme is to face your guilt and
weakness, and to receive redemption and salvation. Just as the three billboards
keep standing out there, the characters’ willpower is as firm as the Oscar
nominations it received.
