As Christopher Nolan rebooted “The Batman” trilogy and earned a
critically acclaimed success, J.J. Abrams became well-known through two “Star
Trek” feature films in 2009 and 2013. The difference is that instead of directing
the third film, Abrams gave Justin Lin all authority to blow up the Enterprise,
and directed the latest “Star Wars” flick himself.
Although the director’s not coming back,
Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is, along with his whole crew. As usual,
their mission is to explore the final frontier, and this time, the USS
Enterprise crew reached the furthest undiscovered place, and was ambushed by a
new ruthless enemy that not only put themselves but also what the entire
Starfleet Federation stands for in danger.
It all starts with Captain Kirk’s long
monologue recording to the Starfleet Captain’s log, which brings the audience
back to the world in where Commander Spock, Doctor Bones, Lieutenant Uhura,
Scotty, Suru all live in, and don’t forget about Chekov whom was played by
Russian American, Anton Yelchin, the unlucky talented young actor who faced an
untimely death earlier this year.
Being an action Sci-Fi thriller, “Star
Trek Beyond” is bristled with adrenaline-filled action scenes, and for viewers
in countries where the motion picture is shown in 4DX cinema as well, it’s even
more exciting. From a harmless gunshot, car moving, crew running, door opening
and closing to Enterprise taking off, 4DX moviegoers get to feel the chair
vibrating as if they’re fighting for their lives with Captain Kirk.
If you are a die-hearted fan of the
original TV series, you’ll definitely love “Star Trek Beyond”. Some “Star Wars”
followers don’t get along with “Star Trek” lovers, and they might accuse “Star
Trek Beyond” of mimicking for putting elements from last generation in the
storyline just like what Abrams did in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Both
Kirk's respectful father and Spock's other self play important parts in this movie, but to
avoid spoilers, it’s better not to reveal here how they appear during the
two-hour journey.
Something interesting to point out is
that, there’s music which doesn’t match the tone of the picture in trailer, and
it aroused a lot of fans’ anger, but as long as you understand the reason why
“The Martian” is categorized as “comedy” at Golden Globe (Who does?), you’ll
totally agree with the music choice in “Star Trek Beyond”. All music that
doesn’t match exists for a reason, and so does the case here, so open your ears
for those songs and enjoy the effect it brings to the feature film.
To be honest, “Star Trek Beyond” can’t
surpass its two predecessors, but it’s still an amazing film which gives you
two hours of excitement and beams you up to Enterprise to explore final
frontier with Captain Kirk’s crew.
