One of the grandest weddings of this century took place over this year’s Easter weekend, that is, the wedding of Robert Pattinson and Zendaya’s characters in the R-rated feature film The Drama, which was released on April 3, 2026.
While knowing less gives you a better viewing experience, this dark romantic dramedy tells the story of a happily engaged couple put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails.
Although some audiences may find The Drama disturbing, Pattinson and Zendaya’s acting skills are undoubtedly enjoyable. As Pattinson’s own personality is a little awkward, cringy, and strange, most of his previous films have cast him for his good looks. However, since Charlie is indeed a pathetic and unique character, and he’s finally British, complete with an accent, Pattinson gets to express a different side of his performance, much like he did in Die My Love and Mickey 17. On the other hand, Zendaya’s character, Emma, constantly stands on the edge of bursting into something, whether anger or tears, throughout The Drama, which elevates her already impressive acting skills.
Since the plot of The Drama revolves around Charlie and Emma’s wedding, the flick clearly depicts how a wedding can truly drive a couple crazy or dramatic in every aspect. There are simply too many ways for a wedding to go wrong. From writing the speech and practicing the dance, to meeting with the photographer, discussing song lists with the DJ, and even the banquet itself potentially ending tragically, which might be the only reason The Drama could be called a romcom.
As mentioned earlier, it’s better not to know anything about the storyline before watching The Drama. To avoid spoilers, there isn’t much that can be discussed, since Emma’s secret is revealed at a very early stage of the motion picture. However, after a series of chaotic interactions that moviegoers will witness, the ending remains open-ended. A more optimistic and romantic viewer may see it as a happy ending or a fresh start, while others may interpret it as a sad goodbye.
It’s clever for the American independent entertainment company A24 to market The Drama as a romcom at first. The first trailer only suggested that something was wrong between Charlie and Emma before their big day, perhaps cold feet, or something else, but it didn’t seem too serious. However, the second trailer revealed the key question: “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?” And clearly, it could lead to the worst scenario one can imagine, thus, the movie.
