“Black Widow” Reveals Her Past

After two years of wait, Marvel aficionados get the chance to go back to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at last to unearth the past of a founding member of the Avengers. Originally scheduled to be released in May, 2020, “Black Widow” was delayed three times as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, ending up being released in theaters and through Disney+ simultaneously on July 9th, 2021.
Better late than never. As the first feature film in Phase Four of the MCU, this adventurous action sci-fi is about Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) in her quest, and explains what happened to Black Widow between Civil War and Infinity War.
Moviegoers are familiar with most of the Avengers’ histories: how Steve Rogers became the first avenger, how Iron Man started Stark Industries, how Thor got actively involved with earth, etc. However, being one of the two currently deceased founding members of the Avengers, Natasha’s origin remains a mystery to the audience, and this time, her past’s no longer unfinished business.
Just like Bucky Barnes falling from the train was haunting Captain America, Black Widow also has her own nightmare and trauma, and there’s no better place to demonstrate them than her standalone film. While Romanoff displays her relentlessness, the audience is able to enjoy action scenes such as car chasing and Black Widow’s most celebrated hand-to-hand combat with complicated fight choreography.
Moviegoers caught a glimpse of the Red Room in “Avengers: The Age of Ultron”, at where Natasha Romanoff was trained during childhood, and in “Black Widow”, more about this top-secret Soviet training program is dug up. Similar to the mysterious assassin organization in the 2002 Hong Kong flick “Naked Weapon”, the Red Room takes young orphan girls across the globe and turns them into elite assassins called “Black Windows”, which Natasha continued to use as her alter ego. The enlightenment of these girls is part of the reasons why “Black Widow” is considered as a feminism motion picture.
Aside from the appealing protagonist Johansson, the attractive Oscar winning actress Rachel Weisz also had an amazing performance in “Black Widow”. In order to aptly play her role in the movie, Weisz needed to pick up the fighting skills she developed in 2012, filming “The Bourne Legacy”. The most brilliant part is that she gave birth to her daughter in 2018, and within a year, she joined the crew.
Although “Black Widow” isn’t as fantastic as most of the other MCU franchises, it’s still an incredible picture worth watching. Besides, Marvel enthusiasts must be desperate to know more about this legendary heroine’s story, and after two years of wait, it really is time to reveal it.
