When he’s not playing Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside his best friend Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman is shepherding sheep in his latest feature film, The Sheep Detectives, which was released on May 8, 2026.

Based on the 2005 novel Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story, this animal adventure whodunnit mystery family action comedy, featuring a bunch of bumbling detectives, tells the story of a shepherd, George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), who reads murder mysteries aloud to his sheep every night, pretending they can understand him. When George is found dead, the sheep immediately realize it was murder and believe they know exactly how to solve the case.

Although The Sheep Detectives is a cliché detective film, it openly embraces that fact. Just like the stories George used to read to his sheep, all detective stories are simple enough to be broken down into a few key parts, so even sheep detectives can crack the case. Following the traditional detective formula, these highly unconventional detectives set out to solve the suspicious mystery.

The Sheep Detectives feels like the sheep version of Knives Out, complete with multiple suspects, a will to be read, and a mystery waiting to be solved. Even though not every character in the flick has a convincing motive, the process of collecting clues and piecing things together remains entertaining. The twist may be somewhat easy to predict, but not obvious enough to ruin the fun.

Naming is a critical element in The Sheep Detectives. George gives each of his sheep a name, which symbolizes that he and his sheep belong to one another, much like The Little Prince and his rose. However, some names carry deeper meanings, and watching the motion picture is the only way to uncover them, though the journey may lead to a few tears along the way.

Choosing sheep as the farm animals to become detectives is an especially clever idea. The Sheep Detectives not only makes excellent use of idioms involving “sheep” to emphasize their characteristics, but also plays with the stereotypes people have about sheep to create amusing contrasts. Much like Kogoro Mori in Detective Conan, their ability to solve mysteries is not the most important thing, what truly matters is how much the audience enjoys them.

As the main character, George Hardy is a shepherd in more ways than one. Of course, he is literally the shepherd of his sheep, but the metaphor of the shepherd appears repeatedly throughout The Sheep Detectives. Just as Jesus described himself as a shepherd, a shepherd does not favor one sheep over another. Even if he secretly has a favorite, he will never treat any of them differently.

All in all, The Sheep Detectives is a delightful family movie, and if you love detective stories, even better. You can enjoy solving the mystery alongside the sheep detectives while laughing at the ridiculous moments that appear throughout the picture.
