After winning Best Actor in a Leading Role (Best Lead Performance) and Best Casting at both the British Academy of Film Awards and the British Independent Film Awards, the Scottish biopic I Swear was finally released in the US on April 24, 2026.

Based on the true story of John Davidson, a Scottish activist and campaigner for Tourette syndrome, this biographical dark comedy docudrama tells his story. Diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at a young age, Davidson was alienated from his peers and struggled with a condition that few people around him understood or had ever witnessed.

Although I Swear is a dark comedy that creates an atmosphere where audiences may not know whether they should laugh at Davidson’s predicament or not, Davidson himself laughs at his own situation and invites viewers to laugh along with him, making it a truly guilty pleasure. Still, the feature film as a whole conveys a somewhat depressing mood through its azure-blue color palette. From the poster and the jacket Davidson wears to the curtains, chairs, and even his chewelry necklace, everything shares the same calming shade of blue, emphasizing a lingering sense of sadness.

Beyond the obstacles and ordeals Davidson faces, I Swear also pays tribute to two of his lifelong mentors. Long before Davidson learned to accept and recognize himself, these two parental figures saw something special in him and brought out the very best in him. Watching the film makes moviegoers hope that everyone with severe Tourette syndrome can find mentors who recognize the treasure within them.

Davidson has also been working with the University of Nottingham on research into a wearable device for Tourette syndrome called Neupulse, and this technology is featured in I Swear, even though it is not yet fully available worldwide as a medical device. So far, there is no cure for Tourette syndrome and no single universally effective medication, but any form of hope or opportunity to improve patients’ lives remains encouraging and promising.

It is not the fault of people with Tourette syndrome that they suffer so much injustice and unfairness in their daily lives, but rather society’s lack of understanding of the condition. As an activist and campaigner, Davidson has devoted tremendous effort to hosting events for people with and without Tourette syndrome, their family members, judicial institutions, and schools, passing awareness forward and helping others avoid the painful experiences he endured.

In reality, not everyone with Tourette syndrome experiences coprolalia, or involuntary swearing, as severely as depicted in I Swear, but uncontrollable tics are often unavoidable. These can be as minor as repeatedly clearing one’s throat or shoulder discomfort leading to shrugging. As more and more flicks focus on this topic, awareness will continue to grow, allowing people with Tourette syndrome to be better understood and embraced. Among them, I Swear definitely deserves a place on the all-time list.
