This isn’t Ryan Gosling’s first time being sent into space, but when it comes to American science fiction author Andy Weir, his characters always seem to end up stranded there, just like Matt Damon in Weir’s previous feature film adaptation, The Martian. This time, aboard Project Hail Mary, there is more to the mission than just self-rescue, and it all reveals when it was released in the US on March 20, 2026.
Based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Weir, this dramatic space sci-fi epic dark comedy thriller tells the story of science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth. As his memory gradually returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance that is killing the sun and threatening Earth. An unexpected friendship may be the key.
When hearing the plot, audiences might assume that Project Hail Mary is going to be another typical hero’s journey story. However, it’s quite the opposite. Without giving away spoilers, what can be said is that portraying a non-hero’s journey was director Christopher Miller and Phil Lord’s original intention. As moviegoers experience this space expedition alongside Grace, the true core value is eventually revealed: the meaning of bravery, and finding someone to be brave for.
From the trailer alone, audiences can already tell that the friendship between Grace and Rocky will be a central element in Project Hail Mary. And just as Arrival suggests, language is crucial when it comes to first contact with alien life. The interaction between the two protagonists is something readers of the novel have long been looking forward to seeing on screen.
There are two storylines in Project Hail Mary. One takes place before the mission on Earth, and the other unfolds in the present timeline in outer space. While Grace is still trying to figure out who he is and why he is there, moviegoers learn the information along with him bit by bit. With surprises revealing one after another, the film never feels boring despite its length.
Since most of the scenes are set in outer space with an alien creature, the entire flick is largely carried by Ryan Gosling alone. While there are scenes on Earth where he interacts with other actors, the most memorable moments are those he shares with Rocky. These scenes help make Project Hail Mary one of the best motion pictures of all time.
As a sci-fi movie, Project Hail Mary pays tribute to a number of classic sci-fi pictures. The most obvious reference is E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Not only does it share the theme of “going home,” but it also includes the iconic “fingers touching” moment, reminiscent of Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam. Other Easter eggs, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Gravity, and Interstellar, are there for diehard sci-fi aficionados to discover.
