When Barry Keoghan, Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo gather for a feature film, it might sound like an Avengers film. However, their latest work, Crime 101, which was released in the US on February 13, 2026, has nothing to do with superpowers.

Based on the 2020 novella of the same name by American author Don Winslow, this dramatic criminal caper heist thriller tells the story of an elusive thief, Michael (Chris Hemsworth), who is eyeing his final score and encounters a disillusioned insurance broker, Sharon (Halle Berry), at her own crossroads. As their paths intertwine, a relentless detective, Lou (Mark Ruffalo), tracks them, hoping to stop the multi-million-dollar heist they are planning.

Before going to the theater, what the audience must know is that Crime 101 isn’t a flick teaching the basics of committing a crime, but rather about a series of heists along U.S. Freeway 101 in Southern California, which includes one of the busiest freeway junctions in the United States. Located on the West Coast, this route not only connects cities, but also fulfills dreams. In Crime 101, it serves as a getaway, both from crimes and lives.

As a character-driven drama, there aren’t many main characters in Crime 101, so becoming familiar with Berry, Hemsworth, and Ruffalo’s roles is enough. Although some critics say that the motion picture doesn’t dig deeply enough into the characters’ backgrounds for moviegoers to empathize with them, all the necessary elements are there. Besides, the characters and what they’ve been through are the real core of Crime 101.

Since Crime 101 focuses more on the dramatic side, there isn’t much action. However, when action scenes do appear, they are just as stunning. Some car chase sequences in L.A. are intriguing, and the parallel editing before the final heist between Lou and Michael is not only clever but also exciting. From the opening shots of each character to the car chase scenes, the cinematography creates the ambience of classic ram-raiding without breaking “too much” glass, and it grabs the audience right away without relying on too much dialogue.

It’s inevitable for moviegoers to compare Crime 101 with Michael Mann’s Heat because of certain similarities in the plot, and there’s no doubt that the latter is a better picture. However, it isn’t fair to say that Crime 101 cannot escape the shadow of Heat, since it is neither a cop drama nor a gangster feature film. The complexity of Heat certainly enhances the tension, but the simplicity of Crime 101 makes the story clear and easy to follow. It isn’t a typical action feature film filled with nonstop action scenes, but it’s still a worthwhile popcorn thriller, and the cast truly proves itself.
