It’s been three years since 61-year-old Brad Pitt last starred in a feature film of his own, and as the first film ever to focus on Formula 1, F1: The Movie doesn’t disappoint. Released on June 27, 2025, it has since garnered critical acclaim.
Shot at real Formula 1 venues with real racers, this dramatic motorsport action delivers nonstop adrenaline and tells the story of a Formula One driver who comes out of retirement to mentor and team up with a younger driver.
With Joseph Kosinski directing, F1: The Movie brings the same atmosphere, cinematic techniques, and pacing seen in Top Gun: Maverick. In addition to sweeping aerial shots and bleacher-view angles that simulate the experience of watching a live Formula 1 race, the flick includes subjective driver perspectives and close-up shots inside the cars. These carefully crafted camera movements provide an authentic and immersive racing experience.
Gambling and trust are central themes in F1: The Movie. Racing is inherently risky, and every decision behind the wheel is a gamble. Winning isn’t guaranteed, but trust can change everything. When Ruben (Javier Bardem) brings Sonny (Brad Pitt) onto the team, he must have complete confidence in Sonny’s abilities. The board also needs to trust Ruben’s judgment as a former racer. And once JP (Damson Idris) and Sonny begin working together, they have to believe in each other and support one another fully.
Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton not only plays himself in F1: The Movie, but also serves as one of its producers. He coached Idris and Pitt on driving techniques and ensured that all details in the motion picture accurately reflected the sport. Fans of Formula 1 will immediately recognize Silverstone as the featured racetrack. It’s the same place where Hamilton had his very first Formula 1 test, and the Hamilton Straight is named in his honor.
Although F1: The Movie focuses heavily on racing, which gives it a distinctly sporty vibe, it also highlights the importance of passion through the different ways JP and Sonny approach their goals. When you truly love something, you're willing to give everything to it, and the movie strongly conveys that spirit.
Even though it may be a bit cliché, F1: The Movie includes a touch of romance that gives Pitt the chance to showcase his charm. While the plot follows a familiar formula and viewers may predict the ending with only a slight twist, the romantic moments add extra flavor to the high-energy race scenes.
Overall, F1: The Movie is a fantastic way to kick off the summer picture season. And if you're a sports fan, even better—this is one feature film that you won’t want to miss.
