All good things must come to an end, and Guardians of the Galaxy was no exception. As director James Gunn signed off his epic trilogy, it’s time for the audience to say goodbye to these amazing outlaws. On May 5, 2023, it’s time to face the music and fly away together one last time.
After six years of waiting, the third and final installment in the trilogy was finally here. As the finale, this adventurous action comedy depicts how Star-Lord, Peter Quill, is still confused by the loss of Gamora, but must rally his team to defend the universe and one of their own in the meantime. What’s even worse is that this mission could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful.
First, before you embark on the journey, it is highly recommended to watch A Marvel Studios Special Presentation: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. By doing so, you’ll be able to better understand the change of relationship between some characters, how one specific character became a member of the Guardians and enjoy the Easter egg in one of the end-credits scenes.
Second, instead of focusing on Star-Lord, the protagonist of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is Rocket Racoon. Moviegoers get to learn about what happened to Rocket before, whether Rocket really is a raccoon or not and where was Rocket from.
As the spirit of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, the concept of leaving no one behind is seen throughout the feature film. Even at one point, the audience is included as one of the Guardians. Also, there’s no all-is-lost moment in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 because the sense of danger is everywhere. The characters are dealing with impending crises all the time.
Aside from inclusion, imperfection has always been the other theme of the franchise. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, characters learn to appreciate and embrace themselves, and remembering where we came from is always the most important lesson to keep in mind. Marvel finally remembered that it was brilliant storytelling and well-rounded character-building that granted them success in the first place.
Besides the abovementioned topics, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 presents a decent final mixtape. Since it’s the last episode, all bookends need to pay off, even the songs. When Come and Get Your Love by Redbone is played on the big screen, it feels like going back to the day when Star-Lord first appeared in Marvel Cinematic Universe, dancing to get the mysterious Orb.
Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 isn’t the best film after Endgame, it still bids farewell in its excellent way, leaving the greatest memory aficionados could ask for.
