As Robert Pattinson has been extremely productive recently, his third feature film this year, Primetime, was released on September 25, 2026. Although he’s finally not playing a weirdo character, the quirky ambience isn’t completely absent from this film.
Based on the dramatized version of the production of the reality television series To Catch a Predator, Primetime tells its audience how host Chris Hansen (Robert Pattinson) sets out to make television history in 2006.
Adapted from a real event, Primetime manages to present different angles of the whole investigation. For example, the so-called “decoys” were originally played by Perverted-Justice volunteers, but some were turned into actors in the flick in order to discuss the psychological impact on the people involved in the operation, which is also a critical matter to consider when it comes to this case.
One of the controversies surrounding the actual series was fame. People criticized NBC for making the show for the sake of gaining popularity by creating news instead of reporting news. Actually, aside from Hansen, a bunch of other characters in Primetime do what they do in the motion picture because of the huge benefits and fame behind it, which also provides some food for thought.
Obviously, the theme of To Catch a Predator is a moral issue, and so is Primetime. However, sexual predators targeting underage persons aren’t the only moral issue discussed in the movie. Despite the characters’ experiences may differ from those of their real-world counterparts, moviegoers are still given the opportunity to ponder their own values while watching it.
Generally speaking, Primetime follows what happened in the real story, but if the audience isn’t familiar with the show, it would be a better viewing experience without knowing any background. All the absurdity, exaggeration, and shockingness would strike moviegoers and make them wonder, “Did all these things actually happen?” Of course, there are elements that are exaggerated or made up for entertainment’s sake, but the actual series was canceled for a reason, after all, so be ready to bear anything shown in the picture.
To elevate Primetime to a new height, we have to thank Pattinson’s acting skills. He has been starring in weird roles in feature films in recent years, but Hansen is a normal and serious character, maybe even a little bit too dedicated to the show he wants to produce. His bigotry and obsessiveness eventually turn him into someone that even he himself can no longer control. It’s truly an enjoyment to watch Pattinson’s performance.
Watching Primetime may not be an enjoyable experience, but as long as documentaries and dramas like the Czech's Caught in the Net and German's No Dogs Allowed exist, this kind of content definitely does some good for society.
