Just two weeks after the release of The Odyssey, a bunch of its cast members reunite on the big screen for another blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, including Jon Bernthal, Tom Holland, and Zendaya.

As the fourth feature film in the MCU Spider-Man series, this adventurous sci-fi fantasy action is not only about a Marvel superhero’s urban adventure but is also one of the best MCU films so far. The plot mainly follows a forgotten Peter Parker (Tom Holland), who lives alone as a full-time Spider-Man until mounting pressure triggers a dangerous change, and a powerful new enemy emerges.

No matter which version of the Spider-Man series you like the most, they all begin with Peter’s teenage years. Therefore, at some point, we need that coming-of-age moment, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the right time for it. It may seem that Spidey is simply back to the days when no one knows who he really is, but the situation is completely different. He has lost not only Uncle Ben, but also Aunt May, and he no longer has friends by his side to support him. This flick shows how Peter Parker prepares himself to become the best friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Like all Marvel motion pictures, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also features a number of crossovers that Marvel aficionados will be excited to see and may even applaud. Besides The Hand, the Hulk, the Punisher, and Scorpion, whom we have already seen in the trailers, there are still several exciting surprises waiting for audiences to discover in the theater.

Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still categorized as an action movie rather than a drama, it contains far fewer action scenes than the previous installments, since one of its main themes is embracing your true self. In order to start a brand-new day, we first need to know who we are and accept ourselves as a whole, including both our strengths and our weaknesses.

Much like Peter Parker in Tobey Maguire’s version, when the Web-Crawler loses his love, he loses his power as well. Despite the fact that it isn’t exactly the same in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the idea is still there. The difference is that Spider-Man isn’t possessed by Venom this time, but is instead battling his own hormones, which parallel a spider’s hemimetabolism. Between each stage of its life cycle, a spider is at its most vulnerable, and so is the Web-Head.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes place about four years after everyone forgets who Peter Parker is, but the Web-Slinger is still destined to interact with MJ and Ned. They simply no longer remember him. The interactions among the three of them, and the changes in their relationships, are sure to bring tears to die-hard Marvel fans. Even though this picture isn’t as funny as other Marvel works, it still stands as one the best of them.
