British feature film director, producer and screenwriter Guy Ritchie’s latest film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was released on April 19, 2024.
Based on the 2014 book Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII by Damien Lewis, this action war drama tells the story of how the British military recruits a small group of highly skilled soldiers to strike against German forces behind enemy lines during World War II. Although the plot is basically about Operation Postmaster, it’s heavily fictionalized for entertainment.
Throughout The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, crises have never disappeared. Within the two hours, crises pop up one after another, and the protagonists can always tackle them not with ease but with unexpected and creative solutions that require wisdom as if they are players of Dungeons & Dragons.
Director Guy Ritchie is famous for making popcorn flicks while maintaining the quality of the motion pictures. People like his early British gangster movies like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, but his recent pictures such as Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr. and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. are also popular. Directed by Ritchie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare may not be an amazing work, but it’s guaranteed that it won’t disappoint you.
Even though the story was fictionalized, the central mission is true to history. Aficionados who are interested in history may later discover that none of the members of the team survived WWII. While most of the protagonists have real-life counterparts, there are a few characters that are either made up for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare or true people who weren’t proven part of the operation.
Besides the adjusted characters, the plot itself was exaggerated as well, especially the explosive scenes and highly stylized violence. Although these are not true to reality, they make The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare an adrenaline-driven film.
Audiences who love the James Bond flicks would find The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare very familiar since this real WWII mission was executed by the British SOE (Special Operations Executive), a spin-off organization from the SIS (Secret Intelligence Service), aka the MI6, which was founded during WWII. The character Ian Fleming, the name Bond, the supervisor M and the unruly characteristic of Major Gus March-Phillipps all remind the readers of the book series.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare may not be one of Guy Ritchie’s best motion pictures nor one of the best movies this year, but it represents two hours of enjoyment, excitement and laughter that are worth watching.
