“Anais in Love” Explores Young Love

Shown in the International Critics' Week section at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, the audience follows Anaïs, a 30-year old woman, who is broke and has a lover she doesn't think she loves anymore. After breaking up with her lover, she meets Daniel, who immediately falls for her, but Daniel lives with Emilie - who Anaïs also falls for.
This dramatic, lively French rom-com reminds moviegoers of the 2017 coming-of-age romantic drama “Call Me by Your Name” with the same ambiance of the affection towards literature, unforgettable summer love and young love towards someone much older. Lots of films labeled as “LGBTQ flicks” tend to actually be motion pictures about gay men. However, "Anais in Love" actually tapped into the rest of the letters (of lgbtq).
Although Anais doesn’t experience much growth in “Anais in Love,” and she’s still the person who’s not afraid of pursuing what she loves, at least she learns how to live at the moment and slow down a little bit.
What we see in “Anais in Love” is the process of Anais exploring herself and finding the love she really desires. Sometimes we need to experience different kinds of love to know what we really want. However, the reason why Anais is attracted to Emilie isn’t obvious, so the audience could only comprehend it as a literature student’s devotion to a gifted writer.
Anais is a perfect example of “everyone deserves to be loved” because she is not only continuously late, crude, impetuous, impulsive, neurotic and rash, but also irresponsible for not having principles to herself. Regardless, Anais shows moviegoers that as long as you’re authentic and genuine, you’re still a loveable subject to people around you.
From the trailer to the movie itself, we could see that Anais is always running. This displays her characteristics perfectly. Along with all the scenes while Anais’ dashing around, there are fast-paced piano sounds and high-pitched, energetic string music, giving the audience an upbeat atmosphere running with her.
Even though moviegoers may not agree with Anais’ behavior, while watching the picture, we would want her to get the love she wants. No matter what the ending is, at least she has tried, and that’s the beauty of young love and youth. You have courage, impulsion and plenty of time.
“Anais in Love” is a bright feature film with all these colorful, sunny scenes, and tells us that happiness is as carefree and easy as going to the beach and swimming in the ocean. Experiencing pure love with Anais within 98 minutes is worth it.
