American independent entertainment company A24 has been producing a bunch of amazing feature films. Recently, it delved into romantic comedy, launching the successful Materialists, and another one, Eternity, which focuses on love afterlife, is set to be released in the US on November 26, 2025.

As a dramatic supernatural fantasy and feel-good romantic comedy, the setting of Eternity is an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity. Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with, Larry (Miles Teller), and her first love, Luke (Callum Turner), who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.

It’s clever to set the tone of Eternity as a comedy since it focuses on the afterlife and death, and the comedic ambiance lightens the seriousness and weight of this topic, which is usually taboo. Although most of the time the audience will be filled with laughter, and there are hellish gags appearing from time to time since the whole film itself is about dead people, moviegoers will also encounter moving moments while watching Eternity, and some tears may be inevitable.

Something interesting is that “eternity” is not only its title, but an important aspect of Eternity. This concept is most often seen or heard in Christianity, but generally speaking, all monotheistic religions have it. However, in the flick, eternity is transformed into a “paradise” or heaven, if you wish, where people can choose to stay “forever” afterlife, and the transition between the human world and these eternities is the transaction. By combining eternity and terminal, such a cliché is given a brand-new lens to be looked at.

What Eternity wants to discuss is what kind of love is worth spending the afterlife with. Is it the long-awaited, passionate first love, or the stable, endurable better half who accompanies you for longer than half a century? The motion picture may or may not give the audience an absolute answer after watching it, but as human beings who still roam the world, we ought to think about this question before we choose the right one to spend our lives with.

It’s actually easier for Joan to choose since she has only had two relationships in her life, but for those who have experienced numerous romantic relationships, maybe it’s difficult to decide. When someone dies, all the interactions everyone has with them become memories after all. Be they good or bad memories, as long as there’s something to reminisce about, they are worthy memories.

Eternity isn’t talking about something new, but it triggers moviegoers’ interest from the second they see the trailer, and as the unexpected storyline reveals and twists pop up, it provides some food for thought and some heart-warming moments.
